Argos: Christmas Past | Christmas Present

Overview
Christmas Past. Christmas Present.
For decades, circling dream Christmas lists in the iconic Argos catalogue was a beloved British holiday ritual. But that warm nostalgia came with an unintended side effect: many still saw Argos purely as a toy retailer.
In "Tales of Argos Past," Argos and T&P teamed up with BAFTA-winning comedian Richard Ayoade and director Declan Lowney to set the record straight with a Dickensian festive intervention.
Challenge & Insight
While Argos remains a holiday staple for toys, its actual offering spans over 60,000 products—including high-end tech, stylish homeware, and premium beauty. The challenge was to leverage the nation's deep-seated catalogue nostalgia without being trapped by it, shifting public perception from "childhood toy store" to the ultimate one-stop Christmas gifting destination.

A Christmas Intervention
Drawing inspiration from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Richard Ayoade stars as a Scrooge-like sceptic trapped in his memories of Christmases past, convinced Argos only sells toys.
Enter beloved brand mascots Connie and Trevor, returning as ghostly guides to stage a hilarious festive intervention. Whisking Ayoade through Christmases past and into the future, the cheeky duo open his eyes to the breadth of modern, premium gifts waiting at Argos.

Implementation
The integrated campaign rolls out across TV, OOH, and social under Argos’ brand platform, "There’s More to Argos":
- Film & Social: Directed by Merman’s Declan Lowney, the hero film balances warm holiday nostalgia with sharp, eccentric comic timing and seamless VFX.
- Split-Screen Nostalgia OOH: High-impact out-of-home placements showcase iconic pages from 1980s and 90s Argos catalogues placed side-by-side with modern equivalents—pairing vintage classics like the original Mr Frostyand Game Boy Colour against contemporary must-haves like Ninja Slushie Makers and Nintendo Switches.
